Late Spring/Summer: Dress casually and in light-colored layers. Tennis shoes or sandals are recommended. Swimwear is appropriate, but bring other layers to cover up. The river water is 47ºF (11ºC) year round; swimming is very cold and due to safety reasons, strongly discouraged. Dress to protect yourself from the sun. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen will help protect you. Bring a light jacket, as wind can pick up. Bring a towel and a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt to cover your arms or to dunk in the river to lay over your shoulders or legs as a great evaporative cooler. Early Spring and Early Fall: Plan to wear warmer layers. Dress in enough layers that you will be comfortable outside in the morning temperature at the Grand Canyon but can still adjust for comfort.
